What is Thai Massage?
Thai Massage is an ancient healing art that traces its routes to India at least 2500 years ago to the time of the Historical Buddha. A gifted and famous Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine (from the route words Ayu (life) & Veda (the knowledge of it) in Sanskrit) named Jivaka Kumarbhacca is credited with being the founder of Thai Yoga Massage.
He became the personal physician to the Sangha (Buddhist association or assembly) and through him and the Sangha much of this knowledge was spread throughout South East Asia.
Traditional Thai Yoga Massage has as on of it’s main tenants the concept of Metta – Loving Kindness or Compassion. Traditionally it was taught through the monasteries and there was a time when it’s continuity was uncertain. Most of the records concerning it’s history were destroyed by invading armies around the mid 18th century.
To preserve the tradition, in 1832 King Rama the 3rd, decreed that many of the postures and techniques be inscribed, on the walls at Wat Pho, in what is currently known as Bangkok.
Wat Pho is traditionally one of the locations at which Thai Massage, a form of Ayurvedic medicine, was taught and today continues to be the leading centre for the study and research into the many health benefits of Thai Massage.
