BANNOCK HUMANE SOCIETY

Dogs Waiting for Homes

The BHS beleives that shelter dogs make excellent companion pets. However, just as dogs give people love and companionship, pet owners need to care for their dogs and provide them with an appropriate loving home. Careful research and planning is the key to adopting the right pet for your family, since adopting a pet should never be an impulse decision.

If you have a special request you can fill out our Online Application Form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

The BHS advises people to consider the six questions
below before adopting a dog:
  1. Am I ready to make a long-term commitment? Adopting a dog means being responsible for his or her health and happiness that should take the relationship through normal changes in life, such as moving. Dogs can live up to 15 or 20 years.
  2. Can I afford the dog? The cost of a dog is more than just the adoption fee; remember to include the cost of food, license, basic and emergency veterinary care, and supplies.
  3. Is everyone in my household in favor of adopting a dog? One adult in the home should be designated as the primary caretaker so that the dog's needs do not become lost in the shuffle of busy schedules. Also, make sure that your landlord allows pets prior to bringing any new animal home.
  4. Do I have at least one hour a day to devote to loving and caring for my dog? A dog requires plenty of love and affection. They thrive on companionship.
  5. Am I ready to take on the daily responsibilities of caring for a dog? Dog's require daily care, such as feeding, and exercise through play.
  6. Am I willing to commit to understanding basic dog behavior and training? Understanding dog behavior will help you train your dog not to chew your furniture and be house broken. Dogs can be trained with patience, understanding, and love.

Honestly answering "yes" to all six questions means that you are probably ready to bring a dog into your life. This will save the animal from being returned to the shelter, and will offer both the dog and the new owner a long and satisfying life together.
