BANNOCK HUMANE SOCIETY

Cats Waiting for Homes

The BHS beleives that shelter cats make excellent companion pets. However, just as cats give people love and companionship, pet owners need to care for their cats and provide them with an appropriate loving home. Careful research and planning is the key to adopting the right pet for your family, since adopting a pet should never be an impulse decision.

If you have a special request you can fill out our Online Application Form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

The BHS advises people to consider the six questions
below before adopting a cat:
  1. Am I ready to make a long-term commitment? Adopting a cat means being responsible for his or her health and happiness that should take the relationship through normal changes in life, such as moving. Cats can live up to 15 or 20 years.
  2. Can I afford the cat? The cost of a cat is more than just the adoption fee; remember to include the cost of food, litter, basic and emergency veterinary care, and supplies.
  3. Is everyone in my household in favor of adopting a cat? One adult in the home should be designated as the primary caretaker so that the cat's needs do not become lost in the shuffle of busy schedules. Also, make sure that your landlord allows pets prior to bringing any new animal home.
  4. Do I have at least one hour a day to devote to loving and caring for my cat? A cat requires plenty of love and affection. Although more independent than dogs, they thrive on companionship. It is also recommended that you consider adopting two cats if there is no one home during the day. Two are company for each other and two will bring more love into your life.
  5. Am I ready to take on the daily responsibilities of caring for a cat? Although cats are easier to take care of than dogs, they still require daily care, such as litterbox cleaning, feeding, and exercise through play.
  6. Am I willing to commit to understanding basic cat behavior and training? Understanding cat behavior will help you train your cat not to scratch your furniture and to use the litterbox. Cats are independent, but they can be trained with patience, understanding, and love.

Honestly answering "yes" to all six questions means that you are probably ready to bring a cat into your life. This will save the animal from being returned to the shelter, and will offer both the cat and the new owner a long and satisfying life together.
